Because you can take a shot from as far away as 300 yards or more, your target may never know you exist. The lenses of hunting scopes have a crosshair to help you find the spot. Sort of like "X" marks the spot, in a way. That crosshair is called a reticle and every scope has one. Some reticles have dots or marks along them called mil dots. Each mil dot measures distance and can be used to allow for variables like wind, bullet drop or elevation. Usually, each mil dot represents a half inch at 100 yards.
