We can never be too careful where fire is concerned. There are so many ways that fires can start, but at least we can help ourselves with the right equipment. Obviously smoke detectors are your first line of defence against fire in your home. Many homeowners neglect these important guardians of our safety so please don't be one of them. In this article, we will go over a few quick tips to keep you, your family and your home protected and your smoke detection system running in top form.

First of all, make sure your smoke warning systems are placed in the proper locations. You should at the very least have one on every floor of your house. In the best case you should have a detector placed in each bedroom of your home, and one near the kitchen as well. With too few smoke detectors it may be hard for people in your home to hear them when their alarms go off.

When placing your smoke detectors it is best if you either place them on the ceiling or around 10 inches below the ceiling if you are mounting them to your walls. Don't place them too close to the ceiling line because an air pocket could easily form around them making it difficult if not impossible for the detector to function correctly.

Finally, make sure you test your smoke alarm system at least once per month. A simple way to do this, is to go to each detector and light a match or cigarette lighter underneath it. If it sounds, then you know that it is functioning properly. However, if the alarm doesn't go off after you've held the match there for more than a few seconds, the battery in your detector is dead and must be changed immediately.

By following these simple tips you can rest assured that your smoke detection system in your house is running on top form. These tips take only a few minutes to execute and can really give you peace of mind when it comes to fire safety at home for you and your family.

For further peace of mind it's a good idea to have a fire extinguisher on each floor of your home and a fire blanket easily available in the kitchen. One of the biggest causes of fires in the UK is chip pan fires, smothering the flames with a fire blanket is the best way to put a chip pan fire out.
