Colorado's got a lot of great places to settle down and call your own. People who like the big city life can venture into Denver, or even Boulder or Colorado Springs. All those larger cities offer a great variety of entertainment, social life and fantastic four seasons weather. For those who prefer a quieter lifestyle, there are more than a handful of small towns, either off entirely on their own or located within respectable driving distance from a larger city that offers more amenities. It's ultimately up to you to pick the right location for yourself.
Superior, Colorado is going to be for someone in the latter category who prefers a small town feel. At slightly over 10,000 people, Superior's certainly no Denver, but it's not trying to be either. Superior has a charm all its own that people who love both history and a quieter way of life are truly going to appreciate. Plus, it's centrally located, in both Boulder and Jefferson counties, so the moment you start feeling the need to have a little extra action in your life, you're just a quick drive away from it.
Superior got its start as a town in coal mining in the late 18th century. 1896 was the year Superior was founded, while it was officially incorporated in 1904. Much like the name suggests, Superior was named for the purported quality of the coal that was found within its borders. Up until 1945, coal mining was the main source of income in Superior. In 1945 the Industrial Mine closed down and the town took on a more agricultural feel when farming became a main source of revenue. Up until recently though, Superior's population remained around the 250 mark. It has only been in the past couple of years that it really blossomed and started coming into its own on a cultural level.
As a town to raise young families in, Superior is a worthy choice. It boasts two public schools that are both run by the Boulder Valley School District, as well as having been the home to a few individuals who were famous in their own ways. Soccer star Marcelo Balboa called Superior his home at one point, for example. The 2001 and 2002 World Video Game Tournament champion Hiro Branson is also from Superior. In addition, the 1985 movie American Flyers had sections of it filmed in Superior. Overall, Superior's a little sleepy but a great place to settle down and enjoy a quieter lifestyle close to action of larger cities.
