Halkidiki (or "Chalkidiki as it is also known as") is the large peninsula in northern Greece and located between the Thermaikos and Strymonikos Gulfs. Halkidiki is part of the periphery of Central Macedonia. Its capital is Poligiros located in the center of Halkidiki (69 km from Thessaloniki). Its closest airport is "Airport Macedonia", near the city of Thessaloniki.

Mount Athos is situated at the third foot of the peninsula of Halkidiki. Mount Athos is an independent monastic state and has a large amount of churches and monasteries.
