South Africans love to braai If somebody celebrates a birthday, we braai When we get off work early, we braai When we do not have anything else to do, we braai And of course, when our favourite rugby team plays, we braai A well-equipped braai area and decent braai equipment is all we need for quality time with close friends.
The right braai area begins with the perfect braai equipment. It's important that your braai area caters for the kind and size of braais you will be having 90% of the time. If you normally only entertain smaller groups of individuals, you do not have to equip your braai area to cater for an entire rugby team. However, if you like amusing large groups of individuals you will need to invest in braai equipment that will not restrict you and allow for only two steaks on the braai at the same time
An important consideration is charcoal or gas, or simply a combination of both. There are many innovative braais available on the marketplace that allows for year-round braaing. You also need to evaluate if you want a free standing unit or if you want a design that you can construct into your entertainment area. Some units even have automatic charcoal makers - these units are usually so easy to operate as long as you stick to the instructions
You should design your braai area in such a way that everybody can interact and be part of the discussion. How many times have you gone to a braai where just one or two people could be accommodated around the braai while the rest were twiddling their thumbs in front of the tv? Make sure that there is enough space for all the guests - the wives and children also want to be part of the conversation
The perfect braai area should in essence be an extension of your kitchen. Counter units on wheels, prep bowls and other eating utensils should if at all possible form part of your braai equipment set up - this will get rid of the "to and from the kitchen" every time you have a braai
