So a celebrity joins Twitter, gains over 2 million followers, and is sitting comfortably at the height of their career. This seems like everything is going according to plan right? Wrong. Well at least not according to Miley Cyrus. In October 2009, Miley decided to leave Twitter because of her (then) boyfriend Liam Hemsworth. Although nobody knows how the conversation went between the two of them, he seems to be quite the control freak. Her last tweet was "FYI Liam doesn't have a twttr & he wants ME 2 delete mine w/ gd reason." Well Liam, maybe her two million plus followers were a little too intimidating for you.

Then April 2011 rolled around, and Miley was back! "Do not fear...the Sheenius is here! I'm not gonna lie. I came back to twitter for 2 reasons. My fans and to follow @charliesheen #winning." This return to the Twitterverse also came just in time for Miley to promote her upcoming Gypsy Heart World Tour. See Miley, leaving Twitter wasn't such a good idea for your business brand. Miley Cyrus's Twitter account was clearly one of her largest and most effective marketing tools. It was about time that someone in her management team knocked some sense into the young pop star.

Now, onto the real meat and potatoes of why every celebrity should be on Twitter: Twitter is truly the only social media outlet where celebrities can really be themselves and say whatever they want. There are no censors and no limits, besides the 140-character limit, of course. Fans and admirers can now be a part of their favorite stars' daily routines. Pink tells her five million followers when she is cooking pancakes; Britney Spears alerts her nearly 10 million person Twitter fanbase when she is getting a massage; and Snooki lets each of her three million "tweedos" know when she is going to the tanning salon (which is almost every other tweet).

The bottom line is simple: no other media outlet gives audiences such an in-depth, personal look at a celebrity. Even better, when a celebrity retweets or @ mentions you, it's like they have personally acknowledged you, giving fans an even deeper connection to the celebrity and their brand.
Note to celebrities: don't leave Twitter. It's a crucial tool for marketing your personal brand.
