The benefits of lpg gas are numerous, especially within the South African situation. Yet peculiarly we are one of the countries which have taken the longest to follow When I spent a some years in Italy and visiting around Europe I saw that almost all of their appliances and heating systems are operated with gas. Lpg gas has a list of advantages, one of the chief gain being the price of the gas. The price of gas is a great deal less than the price of electricity and for this motive more people are thinking about making the change.
Although lpg gas does havemany benefits it is however more risky than electricity because it is flammable . Gas as we are aware of can be the catalyst of an explosion if it escapes in an environment and comes into contact with fire. All it takes is a smallspark to cause a catastrophe. The probability of this occurring however is not possible when the proper precautions are taken. The safety precautions when switching to lpg gas are as follows:
o Only buy your lpg gas canisters from an authorized gas dealer. It is important that when you buy a gas canister, that the seal is not broken. If the canister has been tampered with it means that you are more likely to have a gas leak. Make sure that the manufacturers logo is on the canister and that everything is intact.
o Make sure that the person who installs the lpg gas canister is a registered gas installer. A registered gas installer must have a registration ID card and when the work is completed they must be able to provide you with a Certificate of Conformity which proves that the job has been completed according to the proper regulations. A gas installer is also the person you would call to fix and check your gas appliances and canisters.
o Your cylinders need to be stored in an upright position. It must be kept in a place where children cannot tamper with it as well as in a place that is away from open flames.
o Ensure that the valve of the lpg gas canister is firmly closed when not in use.
o You can check the pipes and the connections of the canister for leaks by applying liquid soup onto the connections and the pipes. You will need to look for signs of bubbles which would indicate a gas leak.
o Become familiar with the smell of gas, so that you can detect if there has been a leakage. Gas has a very distinct smell and if you are smelling gas, you should immediately switch off the gas valve and exit the house. Call your gas installer or fire department immediately. Above all else do not strike a match
o Make sure that the appliances you use such as your gas stove are checked every few years. All worn out tubing must be replaced.
Switching to lpg gas may seem to be more of a hassle because it requires more attention buta it is worthwhile.
