Don't let the town's name trick you. This town's nowhere near Kentucky. It's not even pronounced the same way as Kentucky's town of the same name. Louisville, CO - pronounced "Lewis-ville" - is a relatively small town with a population under 20,000 as of the last census. Its origins date back to 1877 when it was established as a small mining community. In fact, Welch Mine was the first coal mine in the Northern Coalfield, which is an area in Boulder and Weld counties. Louisville got its name from a local landowner named Louis Nawatny.
The last coal mines might have closed in the 1950s but Louisville has made a name for itself in other ways since then. In July 2005, for example, Louisville was ranked fifth out of 100 best places in the United States to live by Money Magazine. It leapt to third in August 2007 and subsequently won the best place to live in July 2009. It's also been ranked first as the best and most affordable place to live by authors of the book "Best Places to Raise Your Family: Top 100 Affordable Communities in the U.S."
With less than 20,000 people residing in Louisville, it might be a concern for some potential residents as to whether or not Louisville has enough activities to keep residents entertained. Louisville actually offers a Recreation and Senior Center. It also has 26 city parks, 20 miles of trails and bike paths and a brand new public library that boasts study rooms and an area for teenagers, making it a fantastic place to encourage reading among your family members. Louisville has six public schools and six private schools, so families are not without educational options for their children. Lastly, Louisville boasts cool but dry winters and relatively warm summers, giving it all four seasons, which is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts of all ages.
