Studies have shown that stress adversely affects your quality of life. A lot of stress is related to work and the surroundings around you. If you've recently retired or want an escape from the hustle and bustle of big city life, consider finding a comfortable hideaway like Nederland, Colorado. Whether it's a permanent move or just an occasional weekend retreat, this little town has a lot to offer people seeking a break from their oftentimes stressful lives.

Located about 50 miles northwest of Denver, Colorado and 17 miles southwest of Boulder, Nederland is a Statutory Town. This means it has an elected Mayor and Board of Trustees but isn't large enough to qualify as an actual city. Colorado has 160 of these types of towns, one of which is Nederland. Nederland is also considered the gateway to outdoor recreation. This makes Nederland a fantastic place to vacation or even live full-time if you're an outdoor sporting enthusiast. Nearby points of interest include Indian Peaks Wilderness, Rocky Mountain National Park, Roosevelt National Forest and James Peak Wilderness. No matter what you like to do outside, Nederland is likely within driving distance of it.

Historically speaking, like many small Colorado towns Nederland started as a trading post in the 1850s. The Ute Indians and European settlers would trade goods between one another, which was particularly beneficial to prepare for winter season in the wilderness that existed there at the time. Between 1859 and 1875, gold, silver and tungsten ore were discovered in mines in the nearby towns of Caribou and Eldora, Colorado, which gave Nederland its first real economic boom.

Another great reason to consider Nederland for your relocation and vacation needs involves the numerous festivals put on within the city every year. Arguably the most popular is NedFest, which also known as The Nederland Music & Arts Festival is held next to Barker Meadow Reservoir, as is the celebratory and historical Miners Day and Frozen Dead Guy Days. NedFest is a three day outdoor music event that also includes microbrew and camping on an annual basis. Music genres are varied but generally include bluegrass, jazz, jam band and world-beat. This festival has been taking place since 1996. Between four to six major bands play each day with smaller numbers scheduled to play in between. Overall, it's a great event to attend if you're a music lover and enjoy the outdoors. And, if music's not really your thing, you've always got the nearby mountains. The sky's really the outdoor limits in Nederland.
