Wide format printing is best described as printing on big rolls of paper or material. There are many things which requireto be printed which are much bigger than the standard paper sizes. The standard size of paper is A4 8.3 x 11.7 inches while a wide format printer prints on material between 17 and 100 inches. To give you a better idea you can think of placards, banners and flags.

Fields which use wide format printer more commonly would be field such as architecture, drafting, engineering and photography but there are many other which require the use of wide format printing.
