With the heavy popularity of the iPhone, it is obvious that there are a great deal of people out there looking for help to some of the products common issues. One issue that seems to happen often with the iPhone and other touch screens or glass faced phones is cracked or otherwise damaged displays. Unfortunately, we all drop our phones sometimes; regardles of how careful we try to be. This can get expensive.
A lot of people who are in this situation are not aware that they could switch out the screen themselves and save a ton of cash. I recently did some research and learned how to do just that. I thought I might share what I found for other people who might be all about saving quite a bit of money. So here is my play by play on swapping out your iPhone screen.
The first things that you need to do of course are to remove the sim and pull off the back, bottom cover on the back of the device. On the top of your phone, you will find a small hole. With a thumb tack or similar sized tool, press the button inside the hole and the sim will come out easily. Now look on the back of the device and slide the small black cover off. If it is difficult to remove, you may need to separate it with a knife. If this is the case, try not to scratch the case or harm yourself.
Once you remove the cover, you should note three small screws holding the large back cover in place. Use a phillips or jewelers screwdriver to take out these three screws and again use a sharp knife or other blade-like tool to separate the cover from the rest of the phone. It should pry or pull off fairly easily. Notice that there is a ribbon cable that attaches this cover to the circuitry in the phone. Gently separate the connector where it attaches to the board. Now the cover is completely removed.
Next, you will need to pull off the antenna wire. Locate the three pegs that mount the antenna in place and gently pull the antenna off. You should also see ten small screws along the outer edge of the phone that attach the front part of the frame to the phone. Remove them and keep them handy.
Next we will remove the motherboard and battery. On the back of the device, find the three small screws on the main board, which is adjacent to the yellow battery. Remove the three screws and gently lift the whole assembly to see the cables that connect to it underneath. Remove the cable connections being cautious not to damage the connectors or circuitry. Now the mainboard and battery can be removed as a singular unit and the front cover piece can be pulled free as well.
The last step is an important. To remove the screen, you must unlatch three retaining clips on the side of the phone. Now, being extra careful, pull the screen from the frame. The wiring that you removed earlier is interlaced through the frame and you must work them through very softly to avoid causing damage the fragile wires or connectors. After you have completed this step, thats it. Now get yourself a replacement display module and put it back together . Have fun. Hope it saves you a little money.
