Lately, teeth whitening has been all the rage. While once upon a time, no one took too much notice of a mouth full of crooked craggy teeth, today a good smile is a sign of success and one way to get that successful smile is with teeth whitening.

There are dozens of over-the-counter products to choose from. Tooth whitening is fundamentally a form of cosmetic dentistry that has been growing steadily in acceptance since the 1990s. In fact there is a difference between whitening and bleaching. Just a quick peek at a copy of the Internet for something like "Costa Mesa orthodontist" has enough cosmetic dentists to overwhelm you for hours.

Dentifrice or bleaches can whiten your teeth. But bleaching products exclusively brighten or bleach your teeth. Hydrogen peroxide is often used in both bleaches and toothpastes. Carbamide peroxide is common in over-the-counter products, while dentists primarily use hydrogen peroxide. If you opt to do your own teeth whitening, always check with your dentist to make sure the product is safe.

If your teeth are yellow, it can be from natural causes, disease, or smoking. As a person ages the adult teeth often become darker due to changes in the mineral structure of the tooth and as the enamel becomes less porous. Bacteria and alcohol can also change the color of your teeth. If you grind your teeth, that can also change the color of your teeth. Bleaching strips, bleaching pen, bleaching gel, laser bleaching and natural bleaching are all different methods to whiten teeth.

If you settle on the do-it-yourself route, you'll use with whitening strips or trays. The whitening agents in the strips will oxidize your teeth. Over a period of time, the dentin layer which lies just under the enamel is also bleached. Many dentists recommend this kind of take-home kit and maintain that they yield the best results over time. Take special care to read the instructions as some products only require a few hours and others may require overnight use.

Some people are wary about using these products at home but used correctly, there really is nothing to worry about. And take-home kits do offer many advantages including long term results, convenience, portability and cost. Getting your teeth whitened at your dentist's office may cost a few hundred dollars. Doing it yourself should cost no more than one hundred dollars.

For the best results there are a few guidelines. Before you whiten your teeth, visit your dentist for a cleaning. Stick to these rules and you'll be amazed at the change teeth whitening can make in your life.
