Professional video game beta testing isn't really that tough. Believe it or not, you might even go so far as to say that it is a simple job which does NOT require too much effort. All you need to do is put the game in, play through it, write down the game's problems, then collect a paycheck after you're all done. Seriously, does that seem like a tough job to you?
Obstacles In The Way...
- You aren't experienced enough. This profession is for lifelong gamers, the type of folks that have lived and breathed video games for most of their life. Should you be a "weekend" player that likes to play games every now and again with your buddies, this probably isn't for you. You will need to know how game creation works and how video games are created from start to finish.
- You are not old enough. Because of a variety of reasons -- the biggest of which being child labor laws -- game testers need to be 18 years of age or older. Some game companies can work around this "dilemma" and make exceptions for particular individuals, but it's a rare thing. Don't get your hopes up.
- You do not have the right gear. If you plan on testing games from home (which is the objective of most testers), then you're going to have to have the appropriate gaming gear; a hdtv, a xbox 360, a ps3, a nintendo Wii, and a high-end gaming PC. If you do not possess this gaming gear (you really should if you're a true gamer), then your only choice is to work at a game testing center -- and that is only if they'll have you.
- You don't have a beta game testing resume. No resume, no consideration of any sort, period. Being a beta game tester means being forced to do actual work which MUST be taken seriously. This is not a leisure activity you do on the weekends.
- You have inadequate grammar skills. Game testers fill out a great number of reports & forms which are used by game programmers to repair & improve game titles. If the reports are not well detailed and effortlessly understood, the programmers can't do their job. If a programmer is unable to do his job, it means the tester has failed to do his.
If the 5 things in the above list are not a problem for you, then you are without a doubt a candidate for expert beta game testing. All that's left for you to do would be to start searching for video game tester positions in your area -- and if you know where to look, that will not take you more than a week or two!
