Females know less than nothing with regards to plumbing, let's face it. But that doesn't imply that we don't have to know what it is and how it really works. Sometime somewhere down the road something is going to break or burst that will need immediate attention to avoid more damage, and you will need to attend to it. Normally, this is the case in several plumbing problems: something breaks or bursts and no one is able to temporarily fix it, which in turn causes a bigger problem and unnecessary expenses need to be paid. I know plumbing may be uninteresting and you think that you shouldn't be working with it at all, but it really will save you a lot of money in the long run. So finding out what pipes, plumber fittings, valves and vents are might not be such a bad idea after all.
Fixing a tiny leak is probably the most helpful plumbing technique or trick you'll ever have to learn or use, because this is where most plumbing problems begin. Should you ever locate a small leak on a tube or drain, this is what you need to do:
1. Quickly shut off the water supply to the problem area by altering the valves located under or near the plumbing fittings. This will prevent the loss of more water and will clear the area that requires attention.
2. After shutting the water down, prepare the area around the leak by wiping it until it is neat and dry.
3. Now you have to close up the leak. Don't forget, this is only an emergency repair. You will either have to buy new plumber fittings or parts, or contact a pluming company to have a look at the problem. Now you can take a roll of standard electrical tape and securely wrap numerous layers around and beyond the leak on both sides of the pipe. Make sure the tape is put on properly and that it covers the entire leak.
4. If the leak is coming from a fitting rather than a cracked pipe, use simple adhesive, found in any home improvement center.
This is just a basic leak fix; don't think that you will only ever deal with plumber fittings and electrical tape, it becomes far more complicated. It is a start, however!
