A vast variety of scented candles is offered today with various colours, sizes and scents. Deciding on which make to try is very difficult. The choice has to be based on some key decisions. These decisions can include;
1. The recommendations of acquaintances
2. Expense (individual brands of scented candle are exceedingly expensive)
3. Candles you have seen and been intrigued by
4. A particular colour to fit in with your décor
5. The type of aroma you enjoy
6. Environmental reasons (soy wax or bees wax)
7. A gift, a special occasion or just for you
8. An aid to relaxation in your home
Consider these points when weighing up the various candle brands. A bit more detail on a couple of these points.
RECOMMENDATIONS FROM FRIENDS
Personal recommendations are a great place to start your quest. Any brands that come highly recommended by your friends, family or neighbours are likely to be good. Keep in mind however that everyone experiences fragrance differently. No two noses are the same and you might be underwhelmed by a particular brand even if came highly rated. Search the web, join in on discussion forums and seek lots of peoples advice keeping your friends recommendation as a starting point.
IS AN EXPENSIVE CANDLE ALWAYS BETTER?
Some scented candles are hugely expensive. I've seen some large candles being sold in the UK for well over £200 a piece! At that price, they probably smell great and last a long time but £200 for a scented candle! Cost is no real indicator of quality. Price will certainly indicate the profit margin. If you're on a budget and are looking for a candle to relax you or perhaps as a gift, then there are a huge number of options. Some of these will be better than others.
ENVIRONMENTAL QUALIFICATIONS
In today's world, paraffin scented candles are holding on with their finger nails. Paraffin candles emit carcinogens (cancer causing chemicals) when they burn, recent research has shown. Not a good thing! Not always but quite often, paraffin candles are cheaper than the clean burning soy candles. The larger candle manufacturers such as Yankee Candle still base the majority of their products on paraffin waxes. Look for the cleaner burning soy wax candles and leave the paraffin wax candles on the shelf is my best advice.
TEST AND VERDICT
So we have a few pointers to help guide our scented candle decision making. It's time to place a few orders for your chosen brands. Make notes about the burn time, fragrance strength and your opinion regarding each candle you burn. Limit yourself to trying just one candle each evening. Look at the first burn of each candle as a scientific experiment. By trial and error, you will find your perfect scented candles. It may appear like a lot of work but the rewards are huge and the journey is fun. A few dollars spent experimenting will eventually lead you to your scented candle heaven.
