Nowadays, people are looking for more and more distinctive and modern ways to brighten up, modernize and decorate their properties. People want to continuously improve and be better than another in any way possible. We're ready to try anything fresh and unique, just to show others that we are ahead of them. Well, glass shelving has now come into the limelight. In addition to increasing the overall look of your home, glass shelves also provide much more space when compared with say, wooden or plastic shelves, because the glass is much leaner than other materials. Let's have a look at the advantages and downsides of wood shelves versus glass shelves. Since there is such a wide selection of shelving material, it can become increasingly difficult to select the one suited most to your requirements.

Almost all of the wooden shelves available today is in fact not genuine wood. Shocked? Most low-cost, affordable furniture of today is made from a solid core of pressed wood or plywood. When this kind of wood comes in contact with water, it swells up and may be damaged to the extent that you'd have to throw it away and replace it. Additionally , it may begin to chip and break apart as time passes. It is usually engrossed in a protective layer of paint or veneer, but even this can not stop the wood from aging and becoming fragile. One of the benefits of this kind of wood is that it is good towards the environment. It's usually made from reprocessed materials, which means that they save more trees and forests from being cut down. Veneers wood is fantastic, don't get me wrong, but it does have some down sides. Firstly, it is not as sturdy as real wood: like I said before, it is known to become fragile over a period of time and will need to be exchanged. It simply is not as durable and sturdy as real wood. Secondly, if you want the most beautiful, rich colours for your wooden shelves, real wood is the best option, but they're incredibly costly, so prepare to pay!

Glass shelving is my personal favourite. I love our environment and want to contribute to saving the planet, so glass shelves, for me, is the better alternative. Just like with wood, you have to look into the various kinds of glass before buying, as the strength and thickness of the glass fluctuate. Most glass will break or chip on any type of impact, either being dropped or lightly knocked, therefore it is important that you select a type of glass suited to your property, environment and requirements. Glass that is heated up is about twice as strong as regular glass, so keep that in mind.

When you are looking for shelving for your family room, bathroom, bedroom, kitchen area or even garage, it's important that you explore the choices of materials and the specifics of the same materials: ensure the shelves are able to hold what you are planning on placing on them and if you choose glass, ensure that it is child-proof: it can be extremely dangerous for young children. Keep all of these tips in mind while looking for shelves: I am sure they will help a lot!
