Stone is quite a common term and is known to everyone. Large portion of the earth’s crust is made of this only. Varieties of stones are utilized for different purposes. Walls, stairs, tables and many other household items are composed of only stone. Superior looking and stylish stones are found around globe. Since some stones are found in only some countries, other countries import it and therefore this business is trans- national.

People supply stones to various places for a variety of purposes. Some stones are beautiful and costly. These stones, like diamond, ruby emerald etc. are of varying costs which depends upon their size and the percentage of quantity present in the stone. Specific stones have specific origins as some are found in deep waters or underground and the natural processes occurring in some particular areas are also responsible for the development of stones.

One stone that is found near hot springs is Travertine. Due to deposition of calcium, these are generally white or cream in color. This stone is available mainly in Italy and used there for building purposes. It is usually mined in other parts of the world. The famous Colosseum is mainly of travertine only. This is a natural stone and used for many decorative purposes because of its bright colour. It is used for flooring in gardens and for making sculptures. The characteristics of these types of stones are they've pitted holes in them, thus giving an indication of damage over time. It's thus supplied both in, filled and unfilled forms. Before supplying, these stones are smoothened and polished. These stones are the most widely used stones these days. They have a slight drawback because they are a kind of limestone. They may be soft and cannot withstand high pressure. So, theses stones should be handled carefully. These stones are mainly imported from Turkey, Mexico and Italy.

Granite is definitely hard and strong stone belonging to igneous rocks. They are grey in colour but can vary based upon composition. It's mostly present in large shape. These are strong by nature and therefore have gained a lot of popularity in the construction field. Today the trend is to make floorings, platforms and tables in granite. It's also trusted due to its durability and longevity and can withstand fire, water, temperature etc. Local granite has been mainly used in the building of Aberdeen and also named after it as ‘The Granite City’. Granite stones are found in abundance on earth’s surface, mostly in regions of England and Scotland. Because of its large deposits, supplying this stone is not very costly.

These days stones have taken lead as everything, be it jewellery or the floorings and a lot of things in between them are made in stone. As stones have acquired so much importance in our lives, it becomes important that everyone is aware and has adequate information about it.
