Septoplasty surgery is essentially a surgical measure to make the nasal septum upright. The nasal septum is the separate between the two nasal cavities. This medical procedure is typically done if the septum is not in the middle point of the nose. According to medical hypothesis, the septum should completely be in the center of the nose. When the septum deviates into either of the cavaties, the cavity gets impeded and it reduces the ability to breathe correctly. Often the inferior turbinate on the opposite side increases in size, and this is termed as compensatory hypertophy. Nearly all of the chronic sinus problems are caused by a minor deviation of the septum. Turbinate reduction may also be advised to further boost the size of nasal cavaties. If turbinate resection is indicated, exclusive care should be taken to steer clear of over-resection which can lead to the empty nose syndrome. Most of the time, these surgeries take less than two hours to be done, not counting the recovery period.
Operational Procedure
The action of a septoplasty surgery typically involves an removal of a portion of the cartilage and/or bone surplus. In the operation, the patient will go under general or local anesthesia, and the surgeon will work through the nostrils, making an incision in the lining of the septum in order to arrive the targeted cartilage. Normally an "L" strut of cartilage in the dorsal and caudal areas is kept for structural support. After excess cartilage and bone have been taken out, the septum may then be stabilized with small plastic tubes, sutures, or splints.
Post-operation
In nearly all cases, it is normal to expect swelling and bruising of the nose. Depending on the operational procedure done, the nasal cavities may be packed, and a piece of gauze is taped to the septal mucosa with catgut can abstain the use of nasal packing, a nasal clip or tamponade. Due to the pressure necrosis by the pack, the suturing will be preventing bleeding, synaechae formation and septal perforation.
