5 Key Considerations in Website Design

Good website design is one of the most critical features of the present, high-tech era and a fundamental point of influence upon whether a visitor decides to look further into your content. Due to this, you want to make their visit as smooth and as fulfilling as possible. In order to achieve this purpose, extra care should be taken while designing a website in each and every aspect. The following five points are worth noting while designing a website to serve the surfer appropriately and to achieve its true potential.

Splash pages normally come up as a first point of contact in a webpage with no practical or useful information regarding the website. Mostly, they are designed with some sleek images accompanied with the words like "welcome" or "click here to enter", and a recent development is the introduction of some elegant animations depending on the nature of the webpage. Avoid using such things and show the visitor, the true potential of your site up front with valuable content.

Due to over exposure, even the least tech savvy people have trained themselves to ignore the banner advertisements, thus you will be wasting valuable website if you are introducing a lot of banners. Instead, provide more valuable content and let your visitors feel that they want to buy instead of being pushed to buy. Apart from that, place the banner ads at appropriate places; don’t make your surfer irritated with unnecessary banners at key locations in a webpage. To maximise their conversion reduce the number of obstacles for the surfer.

You have to provide a simple and easily understandable navigation menu so that even a young kid or a less tech savvy person can handle and navigate through it easily. Keep away from complicated Flash based menus or multi-tiered dropdown menus. A complicated website will just make the surfer run away. A site map is highly recommendable and it should provide a bird’s eye view of the entire webpage so that the surfer can consult the link in case they are lost in the webpage realm.

When visitors are deeply engrossed in browsing your site, you will want to make sure they know which part of the site they are in at that moment. That way, they will be able to browse relevant information or navigate to any section of the site easily. Don't confuse your visitors because confusion means "abandon ship"!

In case a surfer is planning to stay for longer period of time, you should make sure they are not aggravated by some audio playing indefinitely on the website. If it is really necessary to add an audio clip, make sure that the surfer can control the audio with some volume or muting buttons. Another recommendable alternative is to play the sound for a certain short period of time instead of playing it in a looping structure.
