There are little things more rewarding then eating a sausage or steak that you cooked on the BBQ that you, yourself built. BBQ's can be built in as little time as just a few hours and here is how.

First of all you will need the supplies this usually comprises of a 42 gallon steel barrel, now you can use Oil Barrels but it is not recommended and if you feel you have to make sure you clean it thoroughly, usually things like honey barrels work the best. You will also need some 3mm steel rod to make the grill part and some 2"x4". You will also need a range of tools including an angle grinder, a drill, a welder and a socket set.

First of all what you want to do is cut the barrel in half while still leaving both of the ends of the barrel on one side fully intact. Then you need to drill 3.5mm holes 4 inches down from the edges of the barrel 25 mm apart so that you have holes to put the 3mm steel rods through. They need to be strait so that means the holes need to be equal on both sides of the barrel.

You now have to cut a 12 inch by 6 inch rectangle out of the barrel about 4 inches from the bottom of the barrel when it is on its side this will be the door which will give you access to put Charcoal into the BBQ and so you have the ability to clean the inside of it. You now have to connect a hinge to the top of the hole you made in the barrel and the other part of the hinge goes on the top of the door you just made. You should now connect a small handle of some sort to the bottom of the door and install a latch on the bottom of the door so that it can be held against the barrel and no charcoal will fall out.

Now all that you have to do is make a stand using the 2"x4" I recommend making the base like what a saw horse looks like and then bolting the bottom of the barrel to the top of the wood make sure you use tight fitting bolts so that the fire from the charcoal doesn't catch the wood on fire.

Now being careful to not blow a hole in the barrel weld the pieces of steel rod into the holes going along the barrel it should end up so they go just slightly out of both holes. You are now ready to open the little door and fill the barrel with some charcoal. The charcoal should end up being about 2 inches below the grill that you made out of the steel rod. Now all you have to do is light the charcoal and start cooking how you would on a normal BBQ, when you are done wait for the embers to burn out either by leaving them alone for an hour or more or put some water over them. Then unlatch the small door to clean out the left over charcoal and to clean the barrel.
