Since 2005 many Xbox 360 owners have been looking for ways to fix Xbox 360 red ring for good. Many of these consoles have suffered from a general hardware failure which has been caused by them overheating excessively. You will know when this error has infected your console because 3 red lights will be displayed on the front of your console and is also known as a e-74 error.

An error within the hardware system means that a quick fix solution is not going to help your console. New estimates show that 1/3 of all Xbox 360 consoles will face the problem of Xbox 360 3 red lights at some stage of their gaming lives.

Main causes for overheating.

This is a combination of the owner not allowing the console any cooling time whilst long hours of play, plus a design fault by Microsoft themselves. Within your motherboard system is where the heat-sinks are located and are not allowed to take away as much heat from the major components and processors as they should. Constant overheating combined with tightly packed components means any external heat escape from your console becomes even more difficult.

Overall, the main concern and cause for the Xbox 360 red ring of death comes down to its design by Microsoft. Because of the slim and sleek design everything inside tends to suffer as it is all packed in together without any proper room to breathe causing major components to suffer as a result. If you have some form of experience with electronic devices then fixing these errors should be very easy for you. Remove your consoles outer shell then take out the hard disk and DVD drives. Find the GPU and this is where you will find the heat-sink, this lies on top and when you take this out be careful because if you have just recently played it will be rather hot.

How can you repair these errors then.

It is very frustrating for you to get the Xbox 360 red lights after spending so much money on the console itself plus any additional costs of buying the games also. So it is very understandable that you would want to find a quick, cheap and permanent solution to fix Xbox 360 red ring of death.

You can send your console back to Microsoft to get the red rings repaired. This is of course free if your console is still within its warranty time frame. If not you will need to pay Microsoft $140 plus shipping and handling fees and then wait for up to 6-8 weeks before you even see it again. Plus reports from previous owners have stated that the error can come back again even after it has been sent back to Microsoft to be fixed.

Another alternative is to fix the error yourself at home. One suggestion is to replace the fan with a new one and another is to remove the x-shaped clamps which hold down the heat-sinks. Next you will need to place nylon washers onto the screws that connect the heat-sinks back to the motherboard. This will give your console some much needed breathing space within and will allow the heat-sinks to do a more effective job.

Try to avoid using the famous towel trick at all costs. This does actually work but will eventually cause further damage to your console. After using this method too many times it will just mean your console will become damaged beyond repair which can be a costly gamble to a $400 console.
