The times of using your cellphone just to make calls and send text messages are over, because the HTC Wildfire is here, bringing the smartphone in reach of just anybody. Finally there's a smartphone that costs less than € 500,-, which is ideal for anybody who is looking for the advantages of an Android-powered Smartphone, but doesn't have much to spend.

The iPhone, Blackberry and Nexus one are all amazing phones, but they have amazing prices as well. Prices that obviously not everyone is willing to pay. The first step in the direction of affordable smartphones was the HTC Legend, that cost about € 400,-. The HTC Wildfire sets a new standard with its suggested retail price of just € 259,-.
Of course you can choose to get it for less or even for free, but then you're also looking at a 12- or 24-month plan from a provider that can be pretty costly.
How can the HTC Wildfire be so affordable?
Beautiful and slick as it may look in the product photos, you cannot help but wonder if it's wise to buy a smartphone that is so much cheaper than its peers. What exactly has the HTC Wildfire to offer? Does it look cheap in reality? In short, how can the HTC Wildfire be so much cheaper than its competitors?
A closer look at the Wildfire's outside
The secret behind the low price can't be the design. The HTC Wildfire is smaller than its older brother the Legend and weighs only 118 grams. It has a 3,2 inch touchscreen, just like more expensive smartphones. Other features are touch-sensitive controls and the optical trackball.
And how about the specifications of the HTC Wildfire?
The specs of the HTC Wildfire are much like the Legend's. With its 384 Megabytes of RAM and excellent 5 MP camera with LED flash, this phone is definitely a real smartphone. The HTC Wildfire runs on Android 2.1 and we find the same Android applications as we have seen on the other HTC Android-powered phones. These include the capacitive touchscreen with pinch-to-zoom function, built-in GPS and easy access to your social network(s).
Then why is the HTC Wildfire so much cheaper?
In all honesty, the HTC Wildfire's 528 MHz processor is not among the world's fastest. Because of this, starting up takes a little longer than with a 1 Ghz processor, but that's about all you will notice.
Another slight letdown is the relatively low resolution of the touchscreen, which might make reading text a bit difficult for people with less than ideal eyesight.

Who will be buying the HTC Wildfire?
The obvious answer to that question would be: anyone who would like to have the advantages of a smartphone but couldn't afford one - until now. But even a gadget freak might be pleased with the apps that are available via Android market. The HTC Wildfire is everything it should be: a real smartphone at a very modest price.
