Blackberry has had a somewhat haphazard approach to gaming in the past. Unfortunately, this has not changed very much in the world of the BlackBerry Torch. As BlackBerry attempts to become a more consumer based phone, and less of a business phone, gaming could be the one area where they might not have prepared themselves for their competition. The issue is that gaming, both in the mobile world and the world as a whole, has become a more social activity. Today's consumer expects to be more highly involved with their games than in the past. Having a number of games to choose from is not enough anymore. Consumers and gamers alike feel the need to have a sense of accomplishment with games today.

Many of the competitors with the BlackBerry Torch are beginning to see how important this is. In response, they have centered their gaming systems on friend's lists, leader boards, achievement systems, and matchmaking capabilities. Both the iPhone and the Windows phone have already made it clear that they desire to create this type of social environment for their games. The plans for the Android operating system are not as clear, but most people expect the gaming system to offer a social networking aspect. This does not appear to be true for the BlackBerry Torch, however.

Unfortunately for BlackBerry, gaming is no longer a trivial part of the smart phone environment. As smart phones become smarter, it will only become more important. Between February of 2009 and 2010, the number of users who had played a game on their smart phone a minimum of once a month had increased by a factor of sixty percent, and this trend is expected to continue. After themes, games make up the second most numerous categories for the BlackBerry. Make no mistake, the BlackBerry torch is an excellent phone with the capabilities to run high quality games. The ultimate question is whether or not Research in Motion will realize where the trends are headed, and respond to them before it is too late.

The phone has always been a social device. The very first capability that it provided was the ability to make phone calls. Most of the other additions to the phone have also served a social purpose. Texting, recording video, and taking pictures are all social activities for the most part. Users increasingly expect games to be social phenomena that can be enjoyed with others. Blackberry might be able to hold onto its reputation as the phone that is used for business, allowing people to get work done, but if they don't embrace the social aspect they may find themselves falling behind.

Despite the facts about gaming, the Torch is still a desirable phone. Many games available on the phone are still fun to play. If you choose to use the phone for gaming, it is a good idea to invest in a good battery, as games tend to wear out the battery of any smart phone relatively rapidly. You will also want to take advantage of other accessories in order to keep the phone safe. A case is virtually a must, and a screen protector is a good idea as well.
