If you are moving into your own place for the first time, or perhaps you have just gotten married and are setting up your new kitchen, you may become overwhelmed by the task of shopping for kitchen tools. It seems like there is a specific tool for each kitchen task, and picking the right ones can certainly be daunting. Will you buy the same tools that you’ve always seen your mom use, or is there a more appropriate tool that you should buy? In purchasing kitchen tool sets, what you need to keep in mind is the value of versatility and durability.

There are basic kitchen tools that are indispensable and you have to make sure that these tools are included in the set that you will buy. As soon as you have the basics, you may include any other tool that you feel you may have a need for. A spatula is one such tool that should always be present in any kitchen. In fact, a cook should always have at least three spatulas of different sizes. A set of rubber silicone scrapers are also considered kitchen mainstays. Another indispensable kitchen tool is the wooden spoon. This tool can be used with any cooking surface because it is non-reactive and it can be used for stirring type of food.

The best kitchen tool sets also include a durable cutting board. The question as to whether plastic or wood is a better material for cutting boards is still being debated. In general, both types of material can serve their purpose perfectly as long as the cutting board is properly cleaned and stored at all times. Your choice between a wooden or plastic cutting board therefore depends solely on your personal preference. Any discussion on cutting boards is expected to lead to a discussion on kitchen knives as well. You will have to keep at least three types of knife in your kitchen – a 7-inch butcher’s knife, a 4-inch utility knife, and a paring knife. Add a set of steak knives to these three and you should be able to take care of all your cutting needs.

A grater, a can opener, a soup ladle, a balloon whisk, a set of mixing bowls and at least three serving spoons are also some of the most basic kitchen necessities. You may also include an electric hand mixer to the lot. Remember that quality and versatility of purposes are your utmost concerns in choosing kitchen tools. It is therefore advisable to find tools that have multi-purpose capabilities. For example, when shopping for measuring cups, remember that dry and wet materials use different measurements. Instead of buying two different measuring cups, however, you could find one that is especially marked for both wet and dry measurements.

With a little bit of patience and much common sense, you should be able to stock up on top-quality basic kitchen tools and accessories without hurting your finances. It is often much less expensive to buy tools in a set rather than as separate purchases, so look for kitchen tool sets that contain a majority of the basic tools that you need. This way, you will only have to buy a few tools separately.
