Whether it's for a job change, retirement or an escape, moving abroad can be a challenge, and the further you move the more difficult it tends to be. There are a so many things to remember and sometimes it can feel like moving to another continent is one of the most difficult things you can do. Here are a few tips to help make your move to Cape Town a little easier

Passports & Permissions

It's one of the most important things, and ensures your passage into Cape Town, whatever you do, don't forget your passports! Make sure that you and your family have fully up-to-date passports ready for inspection. You will also need visas and permission in place to move to Cape Town, so make sure that you fully understand the requirements before you make that move.

Your Residence & Responsibilities

It is essential that you relinquish residence in your old country before you leave and establish residency in Cape Town when you arrive. The taxman should be fully in the loop with regards to your move. Ensure you are aware of all your responsibilities relating to the change of residency or you could end up with annoying fines as a result of your naivety.

Connection & Disconnection

Plan well in advance, and ensure that utilities companies are ready to disconnect you when you leave your old address, and connect you when you arrive at your new Cape Town address. You should aim to give the utilities companies as much notice as possible, so they are prepared and your move can run smoothly.

Pack Essentials Only

When packing, try to keep in mind that the larger and heavier the load to be moved, the greater the transportation costs. Think carefully about what you need to take, what you can't throw away and what you might consider putting in long-term storage.

Especially when you're moving somewhere far away, it can take a long time for things to be delivered, so it is a good idea to take some important items with you, to ensure that you'll be ok in your first few days when you might still be waiting for items to be delivered. Once you arrive you'll inevitably start accumulating possessions again, so it is a great opportunity to shed some junk.

Doctors & Dentists

Before you up sticks for Cape Town, inform your doctor and dentist, and try to obtain some copies of your medical records for your new doctor and dentist. Once you have made the move you may find it difficult to obtain these records so it is advisable to think about it early on and ensure that your new doctor will have access to your medical history. The importance of this cannot be stressed enough.

Redirection

Getting your post redirected is relatively easy, even to far away destinations like Cape Town, but make sure you activate it in time, otherwise you could end up negotiating with the new occupants of the house to send on your packages.

Most importantly, don't let the stress of the move get you down. It might be difficult at times but you will make it eventually. You could end up with no electricity in your new home for the first couple of days, but it could be worse. Think positive and get excited about your exciting new life. Get moving to South Africa!
