If you suffer from panic attacks then you know how devastating they can be. Your body enters the fight-or-flight mode without any reason, and at the most inopportune times. The violent physical reaction that follows causes intense fear. There is often the feeling of having a heart attack or of losing ones mind. What if I told that there is a stop panic attack technique that can literally force your body to relax, even if you are in the middle of an attack?

Well there is such a technique and I will get to it in just a minute. Before getting into the stop panic attack technique it is important to understand the following: No one has ever died from a panic attack. Repeat this in your head and believe it. It is a foundation that you will need in order to overcome this condition. OK now that we understand that none of the symptoms is life threatening, let us move on to the technique itself.

This powerful technique has been proven to stop panic attacks dead in its tracks. It is called the 7-11 breathing technique. It works like this:

1- Breathe in slowly through your nose for about 7 seconds. The important thing here is to breathe in by inflating your belly and not your chest. It is very easy to do. Instead of filling your chest with air, fill your tummy. Make sure you do this slowly

2- Once you have inhaled for 7 seconds (less if you can't do it for this long), hold your breath for 1 or 2 seconds.

3- Next, breathe out slowly through pursed lips for 11 seconds. Purse your lips to control the speed of the exhale

The key is that the exhale last longer than the inhale. Repeat this for a minute or two and you will notice your heart rate will decrease and you will relax REGARDLESS of what your mind is telling your body.

The difficult part is not the technique itself but having the discipline to apply it during a panic attack. Remember where we established the fact that no one had ever died from anxiety? Use that knowledge and will yourself to apply the 7-11 breathing technique to stop the panic attack.

Do this several times a day and you will find that it becomes easier; in fact it becomes second nature, to implement the technique even in the middle of an episode.
