The Walkman fever lives on with the Sony Ericsson W20. Combining the concept which made this portable audio player a big hit during the late 70's with the latest advancement in mobile communication technology, the W20 is a part of Sony Ericsson's line of smartphones bearing the iconic Walkman name. The W20, also known as Zylo, has regular mobile phone features and is aimed at consumers who can't afford to buy expensive high-end smartphones.

Definitely not a low-end phone

You may think that for its low-price point, the W20 is a low-end phone with a Walkman tag. Nothing could be further from the truth. For its low price tag, the handset, in fact, has a lot of mid-ranged as well as some high-end features which is reason enough for budget-conscious consumers to whip out their credit cards.

A lot of people would expect that since it bears the legendary Walkman name, the phone would lean heavily on the audio entertainment side. In this respect, the Sony Ericsson W20 will certainly not disappoint. The phone comes with superb sound innovations and a lot of high-quality applications that users would wonder how they've managed with their previous music phones.

Lightweight with a big punch

The W20 measures 103 x 52 x 11.5 mm and weighs in at just 115 g, making it a lightweight phone that fits snugly in your hand or inside your pants pocket. It comes with a 2.6-inch TFT screen with a scratch-resistant surface and runs 256,000 colours at 240 x 320 pixels resolution.

The phone uses the Walkman Player v.4 User Interface which makes it a breeze to search for and play back your favourite songs. Whether you use the device in either portrait or horizontal mode, the user interface will automatically rotate to follow the screen's orientation, thanks to its accelerometer sensor.

The device comes with 260 MB of internal memory. If you feel this isn't big enough to store your huge collection of media files, then the phone's microSD card slot will support memory expansion cards up to 16 GB. And that's a lot of storage space.

Audio analysis and identification

The Sony Ericsson W20 uses Music Intelligence technology which provides a fuller and more immersive audio experience. The SenseMe feature analyses the tempo and mood of the songs you usually play. This means that you'll no longer select tracks to create a playlist - the W20 will create a playlist based on your mood.

Changing a track is as easy as shaking your phone, thanks to Shake Control technology. If you need to shuffle the entire playlist, it can be done by shaking the phone more vigorously.

TrackID can identify the music you play on your device. It can also analyse and identify music from an external source like a radio and give you the name of the song, artist and album of that particular song in ten seconds.

For users who like to bring their music with them anywhere they go, the affordably priced Sony Ericsson W20 is a "sound" investment".
