From years of experience in hanging pictures come about certain rules. If a wall appears empty without a picture then this is when you should hang one up and never should you hang pictures on every wall you see unless you've always yearned to live in an art gallery. For pictures, you can hang them over a sofa, in groups, over a server, a small pier table, or a console.
This is not the only rule. Don't let the grouping become wider than the piece of furniture under it. Should you hang pictures that vary in sizes then you should hang them closer together to get a unified look. You may be one who has a prized collection of bird prints with different frames in kind and size. Go for pleasing geometrics when hanging pictures rather than doing so frame by frame.
And now the third rule. Even if pictures are hung close together the wall serves to set off a group of pictures on all four sides as it is also a frame. The concept of pleasing geometry pertains to arranging pictures to form a square or even a rectangle. It is possible that you have four pictures all framed alike and of the same size you may want hang them geometrically in a square over the sofa, or in a straight line over a long table, or vertically above a small step table. If not on a staircase then the step pattern in hanging pictures should not be used. As often as possible you should go for straight lines that meet at right angles. Working better than others most of the time is a little regimentation.
You may be one of those who have been able to accumulate a collection of pictures over a lifetime including old family portraits, originals, prints, and reproductions. You should consider framing and matting everything alike to unify them when you plan on hanging them together. One friend of mine frames 16 prints in simple gold frames that are matted in forest green. A sensational look was achieved as they were set against a red wall. For one friend adding color was a matter of matting each picture over her sofa in a unique shade. The pictures were of the same sizes as well as of the same subject.
Did you ever feel that something was missing as you stared into a department store model room? There is an absence of a sign showing someone had lived, slept, ate, and took phone calls in there. What is missing is individuality. Display yours in your home.
Without the department store model furniture cannot be sold and it is important that a home give you comfort and pleasure. Here you should select a color that you like. A room's mood can easily be affected by any particular color you select. Color is emotional, and different colors inspire different emotions. Finding the right color can be a matter of going over a few color charts until you see a color that you are drawn to. In this case the best choice is your individual choice.
