One of the main selling points of the N8 is that it is Nokia's first smartphone to use the new and beefed-up Symbian^3 operating system. The device is a major leap in Nokia's race to the top against Apple and other top brands in the smartphone competition.

Eye on the prize

The device will, of course, be pursuing the best camera-phone category on the market. No other mobile phone out there possesses the hardware to step up and compete with Nokia's multimedia powerhouse. Consider its 3D graphics hardware accelerator, Dolby Digital Plus surround sound technology, HD capability, Web TV as well as its 12 megapixel snapper and you're staring wide-eyed at a brute of a media-centred smartphone.

OS facelift

The phone's messaging centre has been totally renovated. Text messages now appear in chat
format, similar to the iPhone, whilst the email capability has been greatly enhanced. Inside the email application, you'll be able to shift between different accounts and utilise various filters like attachments, from, dates and many more, just like what's on Outlook and Gmail.

The N8 phone's home screen (make that home screens) went through major changes. There are now three home screens, each one loaded with their own apps, widgets, and theme. These home screens are connected to the internet and your Facebook, Twitter and other networking sites are updated automatically, that is if you have a working data connection. A certain number of applications will come pre-installed on the device upon purchase but you can download more of these via direct link to the Ovi Store.

Another striking Symbian^3 feature is the graphic multitasking screen which opens when you press and hold down the home screen button. This enables you to see the number of apps that's open and running on your phone. Browsing the web is a breeze because the UI has no problems handling Flash.

Multimedia on steroids

The Nokia N8 comes equipped with a stunning 12 megapixel digital camera with 4000x3000 pixels image resolution. It boasts Carl Zeiss optics, Xenon flash, autofocus as well as face and smile detection. The camera can record HD 720p video at 25 fps and has a front-facing VGA camera for video calls. High-def videos can be viewed on big-screen HD TV using the phone's HDMI output port.

Watching high-def videos on HD TV through the phone is made more spectacular with the device's Dolby Digital Plus surround sound technology. Stunningly fast graphics is made possible by the phone's dual chip setup. On one hand is the ARM 11 680 MHz mobile processor for all the smartphone features and, on the other hand, is a separate but undisclosed 3D Graphics hardware accelerator for dazzling images and 3D graphics acceleration.

The Nokia N8 has a 3.5-inch AMOLED capacitive touchscreen and is equipped with 3G, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and microUSB connectivity. It comes with 16 GB on-board storage memory that is expandable up to 32 GB using microSD memory expansion cards. The phone comes in five colours - Silver White, Orange, Blue, Green and Dark Grey - which are anodised to resist scratches and fading.
