India will be soon in 1st position in the market of DTH compare to the United States due to strong growth of DTH market, Currently United States are the market leader in DTH (Direct to Home) service, will be second to India soon. By this year-end, India will leave the US behind, which has got a 32 million subscribers base, making India the largest DTH country.
Currently there are seven DTH service providers are available in the market and their combine revenue is $2billion.
"The industry is clocking at 18 per cent growth this year. The industry expects to register around 11-12 million new customers this year as once the festive season sets in with Onam in August, followed by Ganesh Chaturthi, Durga Puja, Diwali and Christmas will definitely see 12 million new customers," said by the Anil Khera, CEO of BBCL.
BBCL is the DTH broadcast arm of the multi-billion dollar Videocon Group. At least 15 per cent of this growth is due to Football World Cup fans from Mumbai, Pune and Bangalore, apart from the traditional football bastions of the East, North-East and Kerala, getting new connections. Last month itself, 9.55lakh subscribers were added in the market.
The Direct-to-home (DTH) subscribers will soon have a la carte menu of channels to choose from, but will have to pay a minimum fee of Rs. 150 a month.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has issued its tariff order form 1st Sept. 2010, for digital addressable systems - such as DTH and IPTV -and has given instruction that DTH user should be free to choose the channel they want, than to be forced to pick a bunch of channel that not required.
The changes must be applied by September this year and the final deadline will be January 2011 if DTH service operators needed extra time for technical upgrade.
DTH Service providers have been told to publish channel rates every three months, with a 30-day notice period for any changes. If they want to fix a monthly minimum subscription, the bill cannot exceed Rs. 150.
TRAI has also told DTH broadcasters that they can charge DTH operators only 35 per cent of the fee they charge regular cable TV operators for their channels. This is because DTH allows an accurate record of subscribers opting for different channels, unlike the regular cable TV, where broadcasters must rely on the data reported by operators.
The tariff order comes a day after TRAI told the Supreme Court that it plans to cap regular cable TV charges at Rs. 250 per month. The regulatory agency has also submitted its recommendations on the government's uplinking-downlinking policy.
TRAI feels there should be no cap on the number of satellite-based TV channels allowed to uplink or downlink content in India.
