Shout the name Pikachu in a room and the likelihood that someone, if not everyone, will turn their head and smile is great. Pokemon has fast become a staple of pop culture and has a firm standing in the gaming community. Pokemon Yellow the Special Pikachu Edition has been a resounding success for the franchise since it first hit the shelves.

Trekking all about the Kanto region in search of rare and common monsters alike are still in this game version, and just as enjoyable as ever. The main trainer is not traveling alone on foot this time, though, since Pikachu makes his appearance and follows the protagonist everywhere they go. With a friend at the player's side, nothing can stop them in their journey to be the greatest Pokemon Master of all time.

This game, in the long chain of the franchise, has the unique feature to posses the starter pokemon, Pikachu, following the trainer outside of its pokeball. The young trainer eventually meets many cameo characters from the animated show, like the rock gym leader Brock, and water master Misty. Along with many upgraded visuals and game enhancements to its predecessors, Yellow had mini games that allowed the trainer to play more with their Pikachu.

The trainer always keeps the goal of becoming the next great Pokemon Master in their head as they venture forth into the wild world. The player must defeat all eight gym leaders and their respective monsters, as well as the legendary Elite Four. However there are more than just pokemon lurking in the shadows, since Team Rocket is out to use the monsters for their own selfish gain.

Along the same lines as the show, many familiar characters make their welcomed appearance in this version, like Misty and Brock. These two are the famous friends of the main character from the anime. Jesse and James, followed by Meowth, will obstruct the path every now and then just like the show.

Pikachu also makes the game more interesting with its many emotions that vary depending on how the user plays the game. Since Pikachu walks on the ground and not in his pokeball, the trainer has more opportunities to interact with his small little friend. The times when Pikachu tries to talk with the trainer are quite memorable indeed.

Pocket Monsters, or Pokemon as it is more commonly referred to, is a wonderful game that is a must play for all ages. No matter if the player is a casual or hardcore gamer, there is something to be enjoyed by all audiences. Pokemon Yellow was a gem in its time and still is quite enjoyable now.
