It seems that mobile phone companies are in a battle centered on manufacturing affordable phones that are still heavy on the operating system. With all those inexpensive handsets, it's not a wonder that Samsung has decided to join the bandwagon by releasing the Samsung Wave 2 & Wave 2 Pro, in order to secure their spot as a strong competitor in the market.
Bada
Following the Samsung Wave's suit, the Samsung Wave 2 & Wave 2 Pro are the two new mobile phones to sport the budding Bada operating system. This platform was developed by Samsung Electronics intended to cover both the lower-end and higher-end mobile phones.
Although this platform is rather new in the industry, companies such as Blockbuster, Gameloft, Capcom, EA and Twitter already expressed their support for the new operating system. Aiming to compete with other developers of mobile phone operating systems, Samsung opened its very own application store called the Samsung Apps.
As of July 2010 the store is comprised of 300 applications, 70% of which is free for consumers using the Bada. By the end of 2010, Samsung expects the store to have as much as 7000 downloadable applications.
Wave 2
Upon inspection, it appears that there's not much difference between the Samsung Wave 2 & Wave 2 Pro. Let's take a look first at the Wave 2 which is a rectangular device with measurements of 109.5 x 55 x 11.7 mm.
For a mobile phone within a price range that's not too expensive, the 3.2-inch TFT capacitive touchscreen with ability to display 256K colors and with resolution of 240 x 400 pixels is quite a bargain. This is made even more pronounced especially since the panel comes with accelerometer sensor and the TouchWiz user interface.
The appeal of the Wave 2 is more on the convenience it offers consumers since it is able to pull together your email and IM, as well as messages and updates from social networking sites.
Some may wince at the fact that this phone does not support 3G networks which implies the absence of 3G HSDPA. The good thing, though, is that it still supports Class 10 versions of GPRS and EDGE and it comes with WLAN WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, where the 802.11n is the best to date when it comes to speed and range.
Like all other mobile phones that can play music and videos in different formats, this handset can support quite a number of formats such as MP3, WAV, eAAC+, MP4, H.263 and H.264. This makes the storage capacity of the handset so much more appealing, although the storage capacity is only 80 MB, you can expand it to up to 16 GB via microSD, especially useful for storing those music and video files.
Wave 2 Pro
As was stated above, there is really no difference in features between the Samsung Wave 2 & Wave 2 Pro except for the slide out QWERTY keyboard of the Pro. As such, it's expected that the Pro's measurements also varies from the Wave 2. According to Samsung, the Pro has dimensions of 109.5 x 55 x 15 mm, making it 3.3 mm thicker than Wave 2.
