They use this to market their products and services and because it was effective, it has been used since then. Many people don't enjoy reading tons of sentences from newspapers that's why putting catchy pictures in it will surely catch their attention. A picture not only tells a story but it can also be compared to doing a good deed which could be interpreted in many ways.
