Even with all of the attention the internet is getting when it comes to creating phenomenal success in network marketing, there are still some offline prospecting techniques that work like gangbusters. Drop cards is definitely one of them.
A drop card is simply a business card that looks like a $100 bill when folded, and they are typically just dropped on the ground for an unsuspecting passerby. On the card is something about making some extra cash and a phone number or website for interested people to contact you at.
Effective Placement of Drop Cards
To get maximum AND quality exposure from your drop cards, make sure you don’t just drop them anywhere, creating litter and trash for someone else to pick up. Place them in these strategic places, and the response you get will be targeted and complaints will be at a minimum.
1. Bookstores & Libraries
Go into your local Barnes & Noble and pick a section of the store that your targeted prospect would go to (self-development, home business, etc.). Find some good books and magazines and place a drop card inside. Magazines are great because you can just locate the cover story and pop one of those suckers right in there. Targeted response / high quality leads.
2. Restaurants
This is a widely used avenue for placing drop cards, but nonetheless can be quite effective. Make sure you leave a decent tip then just leave a card with the tip. You can even ask your waiter or waitress at some point during the meal “Would you be interested in making some extra cash part-time without it interfering with your current job?” I mean come on, who in their right mind would say no to that?
3. Airplanes
Grab a stack of drop cards before you take your next trip and get a ton of leads from 30,000 feet. Make sure you are one of the first to get on the plane (or the last to get off), and place a card in the magazines in front of each seat. People are stuck the plane for hours at a time; being sold tons of goodies through magazines like Skymall, why not get in on the action?
4. Toll Booths
If you’re in an area that has toll roads, next time you have to pay a toll, look at the car behind you. If it’s a decent car, pay their toll and tell the attendant to simply give a drop card to the person behind you. Now you’ve caught their attention, they LIKE you, and they are holding the path to a successful business in their hands. What more could you ask for?
5. Coffee Shops
Coffee shops are perfect for drop cards that use a website rather than a phone number because people often times come here to do work on their computers. You get immediate exposure to your website or lead capture page and you capture a prospects attention while that drop card is still fresh in their mind.
What to put on your drop card
In the past, these cards have typically had a few lines of text and a phone number to call if you’re interested. That’s a great way to get on the phone and talk to your prospects, but you don’t have an effective way to sort those prospects prior to the phone conversation.
A much better way to increase the quality of leads is to send them to a website or lead capture page that gives a general overview of what you have to offer. Interested AND motivated prospects will opt-in to the website to get more information, while those who aren’t interested will simply stay away. Now that you have their information you can send them a series of emails THEN follow up on the phone. Quality leads and a professional sorting system makes for an explosive business model.
