The Ford brand was set up on $28,000 with 12 separate investors, two of which were the Dodge brothers, John and Horace, who later created their eponymous brand. Also created in this year was the first Ford model - the Ford Model A.
Following this, Ford grew and grew, eventually becoming the automotive behemoth that it is today, though it did not escape all negative aspects that could cause problems for the company. Listed below are five key points in the timelines of the history of Ford Motor Company, as compiled by the company Central Contracts.
1896-1903: In 1896, the Ford Quadracycle is created as Henry Ford's first vehicle, on the frame of a buggy and supported by 4 bicycle wheels. In 1898, Ford creates the Detroit Automobile Company, but two and a half years later it was dissolved. In 1901, Ford wins a high-profile race and the Henry Ford Company is later created, but discontinued a year later. In 1903, Ford Motor Company is fully created.
1906-1919: By 1906, Ford Motor Company becomes the best-selling make for the US, with a healthy production amount of 8,700 vehicles. Three years later, Ford Motor Company England, or more commonly, Ford Britain, is formed to effectively target the UK market. Two years following this, in 1911, Ford also creates a factory in Manchester to facilitate quicker production of vehicles. Eight years later, in 1919, Edsel Ford takes over the position of president from his father, Henry.
1929-1945: In 1929, the annual production of Ford cars peaks at a total of 1.5 million, taking the production crown and dominating the market, knocking Chevy off the top spot. Later, in 1941, Ford design a general purpose jeep specially designed for military use and the design of the grille placed on the front of the vehicle is still used today. Two years later, Edsel Ford sadly dies of cancer, with Henry Ford resuming presidency, until 1945, when his grandson and son of Edsel, Henry Ford II takes over.
1947-1989: Henry Ford II takes over as chairman following his grandfather's death in 1947. 10 years later, Ford commemorates a past president with a new brand of automobiles - the Edsel, and increases production of Ford vehicles to 1.68 million. Three years following, Robert McNamara, the newly-appointed US Secretary of Defense becomes the President of Ford. To dominate further automotive markets, Ford of Europe is set up in 1967. Ford acquire a quarter of the Mazda brand in 1977, followed by acquiring Aston Martin Lagonda and Hertz Rent-a-Car in 1987. In 1989, Ford also acquire Jaguar.
1999-2010: The great grandson of Henry Ford, Bill Ford becomes Chairman of the Board and Ford acquire Volvo car division from Volvo in 1999. The following year, Ford purchase Land Rover from BMW. Six years later, Ford enacts a restructuring program to close unsuitable factories - Alan Mulally also becomes CEO and President. Ford sell Aston Martin, Land Rover and Jaguar over the next three years to reduce significant company losses. However, despite this, Focus leasing at the leasing company Central Contracts has become so favourable.
With the recent restructuring program and a continued brand trust, it would appear likely that the firm will soon regain the market dominance and profits it once had; whatever the future might hold for the company, it is clear that this is a vital brand that has cemented its place in automotive history.
