The invention of the laptop computer opened up a myriad of possibilities for the itinerant businessman. Gone are the days when you had to carry a bulky attache case stuffed with unwieldy documents like a Thanksgiving turkey. Imagine the embarrassment of the pre-laptop days when you had to sort out stacks of printed papers in front of an impatient client. Good thing a highly imaginative guy named Alan Kay made possible the invention of the first laptop prototype in 1968. Dubbed as the Dynabook, the idea was to provide people with a "personal portable information manipulator." However, it wasn't until September 1975 that the first commercially-available portable computer was introduced to the public. Compared to recent day laptop computer models, the first portable is crude. Primitive, it may be; but it does the job better than that monolith of a desktop computer that people used to work on in the office.

The invention of the laptop freed the modern businessman from the fetters of disorganization and the clutches of the bulky desktop. Vital business information can now be carried anywhere the businessman might go. This is crucial since the ever-increasing demand of the growing market requires entrepreneurs to be more flexible in dealing with the needs of their clients.

The dawn of the Internet age added more power to the compact computer. Once limited as a portable device to carry information and necessary documents is now upgraded into a dynamic tool for communication and whatnot.

Due to its larger storage capacity and faster processing speed, the modern laptop computer can deliver a performance that can equal the efficiency of an entire business office in the 80s. It can store a large amount of information that would fill up a whole building during the pre-laptop days, it can research about the latest trends in the stock market, it can facilitate consultation with a client from India, and it can do almost anything that a modern businessman needs.

The usual size of a notebook computer ranges from 10?8 inches to 15?11 inches. It can weigh from 3 to 12 pounds. The ever-downsizing incarnation of the modern laptop computer makes it more favorable for the travelling businessman. Albeit its tendency to get smaller and smaller with every new model, one thing is for sure-its capacity to perform monolithic tasks won't dwindle.
