As Facebook gathers and consolidates its position of strength fewer and fewer people are able to resist the urge to take a look at this global phenomenon. However this can be where the trouble begins for although the site maybe a global success the content that is contains is not of global authority.

For those of us who can remember the days before computers invaded every part of our lives, we still remember how to do research in a formal and organised manner.

You had to keep it organised and arrange meetings with your sources as it had taken you ages to get to this point and the last thing you wanted was one piece of rogue information making the whole piece worthless.

In the modern world, an idea can go from thought to published article in a matter of minutes, which means that the opportunities for verification and subject consideration are all too often bypassed.

This is the only world that our younger generation knows

This partly explains the popularity of social sites like Facebook and Twitter, where you can quickly pick up on a conversation, join in and no one has time to actually verify or consider fully the implications of what is being said.

It is all to easy to get caught up in the mood of the moment and yet instead of it being just you and those around the water cooler passing uninformed thoughts or opinions on people. There is a whole on-line community that may take what you have said as gospel and spread your message far and wide.

With this in mind it is useful before you go anywhere near a social interactive or Web2.0 site to consider why you would want to go there.

They are great for finding old friends or enabling distant relatives to keep in touch without running up large mail or call costs and of course they allow business to communicate directly with their customers.

As with all things in life self control and following your conscience are the 2 keys to staying out of trouble.

Whilst on these sites for business or pleasure always remember that an expert is only someone who has a reputation for knowing more than you, whether this reputation is based on fact or fantasy is for you to decide. It is essential that you do clarify how they came to be an expert before you start to spread their message, otherwise you will sink along with them when the truth finally does reveal itself.
