You have spent many years and many great nights getting to know your closest friends. Even after all this time there are still things you do not know about your friends and often this is by mutual agreement, there is no correct answer on the subject of politics so you all agree to void that topic.

On-line in the interactive world of Web 2.0 there has been no such learning curve and there is no time or space to share everything that constitutes the real you, so how do you know who you are dealing with on-line.

In the carefully planned canvas that is the social profile, the content is pretty much meaningless when it comes to discerning the real person behind the text.

If they have been truly cynical they will have done their research and the resulting profile will match their ideal market demographic, this of course is all too easy to do.

However to carry this through consistently whilst being active on-line would mean having to concentrate and focus on every word that is placed on-line and of course there is the problem of what happens when they become successful.

Eventually once their level of success merits the invitation, they will be called forward to attend a live event, now hopefully they will not have gone to the extent of faking the profile picture.

However when Dangerous Dan the abseiling fan turns out in reality to be Bob the beer mat collecting alcoholic he will have a lot of explaining and reputation rebuilding to do.

As you now know how not to do it.

What is the best strategy to get the real you known on-line, unfortunately there is no quick or complete method. Social media should never be just about you, your friends or the product, it has to balance all of these elements.

Your profile can of course give some insights into your personality or what it was when you filled it in. On the daily basis you can only ever give small snippets of relevant information during a chat or a response. Overtime these will all help to form a picture of the real you in your circle of on-line friends minds.

Of course they even with all these snippets they may still be well wide of the mark, which is why I consider that the best way to get to know people is via the traditional method of face to face.

Attending live events and the social interaction that occurs during Q & A sessions and later when everyone is relaxed in the bar are the 2 natural ways that we determine who those around us really are.
